In the current century, this specific term has been argued, accepted, denied, experimented, marketed, exploited, and neglected countlessly by many but understood by none. In rural India it is common to hear and eye witness many incidents of so called ‘Demonic Possession’.
Nowadays medically termed as Trance and possession disorder (TPD) is a rare and complex psychiatric condition characterized by episodes of altered consciousness, during which individuals may exhibit behaviour, speech, or actions inconsistent with their usual personality, there are many psychological reasons the human brain reacts and acts in a certain way to certain set of events causing numerous common and rare mental disorders which can be mistaken effortlessly for possessions.
The persistent question still lingers in the modern-day commoner’s mind that is there something supernatural or it’s all a hoax. This specific question has become a very good remunerative source for a huge mass. But to our ancestors it was all simple and they understood the subject both medically and spiritually, till the 18th century it was called ‘Bhoot Badha’ in India, the term basically and literally means problems of the past. They experimented and sought out various ways for the treatment of ‘bhoot badha’ that included hard treatments like hitting the person with a whip-like stick generally made out of neem or using a red-hot holy pair of tongs ‘chimta’ to give first degree burns around the wrists and below the feet, isolated quarantine etc. to soft treatments like trance therapy thru havan and sacred mantras, periodic medications using ayurveda, various yogic kriyas etc.
But with time, foreign influence hampered the subject’s righteous practice, some started terming the hard modes of treatment as barbaric and unjust, Whilst some started to manipulate the ways of practice for their own benefit. As time went by the circus expanded which sarcastically justify the scenarios we witness today.
